So often, top attractions and destinations no matter where you travel are related to the natural wonders of an area, and no where else is this more evident than in the great state of Hawaii. Located on the Big island of Hawaii is just one such destination. Called Akaka Falls State Park, this park is home to many wonderful sites, but is most noted for its stunning waterfall.
Located just around 11 miles north of Hilo, the famous Akaka Falls plummet straight down over 420 feet on KoleKole Stream and are also just down stream from another waterfall, albeit much smaller, named the Kahuna Falls. Like most of Hawaii, this part of the island is also filled with stories and lore dating back to the times of the ancient Kings.
Located along the area known as Hamakua, this park is convenient and the trail makes viewing these stunning waterfalls quite simple. Just two of many amazing waterfalls in the state of Hawaii, some of the other more famous waterfalls in the islands include:
Hiilawe Waterfall – One of the tallest on the island today, it is located on the Big Island and is around,1,450 feet tall. Located in Waipio Valley these falls sometimes dry up due to irrigation.
Kahiwa Falls – A tiered waterfall, it is located on Molokai on the northern shore. About 2,160 feet tall, it includes 6 tiers and can only be view from the sea or the air.
Makamaka’ole Falls – Located on Maui, these falls can be seen from mile marker 8 in a small valley. A two tier waterfall it is accessible by hiking.
Makahiku Falls – A 200 foot tall horsetail waterfall in Haleakala National Park, it is located on Maui.
Olo’upena Falls – Fourth tallest falls in the world, this waterfall is on Molokai. Plummeting off the edge of the island into the sea, this fall can only be seen from the air.
Rainbow Falls – Located on Hilo, this waterfall is just around 80 feet tall and accessible from Wailuku River State Park.
Waihīlau Falls – Third tallest in the islands of Hawaii, it is 2,600 feet tall and is locate on the Big Island.
