If you travel to Alaska, you will more than likely experience the Alaska Marine Highway or the AMHS at some point during your journey. Founded in 1963 by Steve Homer and Ray Gelotte, it was purchased by the state government in 1963 and expanded to include service to Prince Rupert, British Columbia and Seattle Washington. Named an All American Road in September of 2005, this is one road you don’t want to miss.

The AMHS is the perfect way to explore the wilderness of our largest state. Including over 3,500 mile of scenic coastal routes, the options for travel on this route are limited only by the amount of time you have. Offering a number of possibilities including one day, many days or even weeks, you can explore just a few miles to the entire 3,500 mile area and see some of the most well known, unique and splendid aspects of Alaska including:

The entire route served by the Ferry system today includes operations as far south as Bellingham Washington and west to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor including 32 separate terminals. What makes this so special and unique are the experiences offered by this unique state owned ferry service. Here you have the opportunity to drive to a port, park your car and take a journey, bringing your car with you to the next journey. Onboard, guests have the option of staying overnight in cabins or camping in tents or sleeping bags in outdoor areas. Onboard naturalists, food service, movies and entertainment make ferry travel a wonderful not only to get where you are going, but have a great time doing it.
